Amman, January 20, 2026 – The Italian Embassy to Jordan and the Department of Palestinian Affairs (DPA) signed today an Agreement for the implementation of the “Sustainable cities: upgrading urban wastewater systems in Al-Soukhneh Camp” initiative, financed by Italy through 1.75 million euros grant and focused on upgrading the wastewater network in the Palestinian Camp, that hosts nearly 7.000 residents.
The initiative aims to improve infrastructure and sanitation services in the camp, contributing to enhancing environmental and public health conditions and services and to promoting better living standards for residents. Activities will be directly implemented by the DPA in coordination with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
With the Agreement signed today, Italy confirms its commitment to supporting refugees and host communities in Jordan, and to strengthening development cooperation with national institutions.
Eng. Rafiq Kherfan, Director General at DPA, emphasised the importance of this vital project, praising the partnership with the Italian Cooperation and the continued support of the Italian Government, which reflects the depth of bilateral relations and the shared commitment to supporting sustainable development projects in the most fragile areas of Jordan.
Mr Luciano Pezzotti, the Italian Ambassador to Jordan, highlighted the importance of the infrastructure services in Jordan, and stated that “the initiative reflects Italy’s steadfast commitment to supporting the Jordanian Government’s efforts in providing basic infrastructures for all and enhancing water and sanitation services to support vulnerable communities. The investment in WASH services contributes to the resilience of people most in need, by also generating significant benefits to public health and environmental protection”.
