Biography

Before taking up his role in Amman, Mr. Romano worked at AICS Rome as a Technical Officer for Emergency and Fragile States Unit. In this position he acted as focal point for the Libyan and Afghan crises and he supported humanitarian, resilience, and demining initiatives across AICS offices in Amman, Hanoi, Cairo, Islamabad, and Tunisia. He also represented AICS in major international working groups, including EU COHAFA, the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) Initiative, OCHA’s Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) mechanism, and the Pooled Fund Working Group (PFWG).

His career includes significant positions at UNESCO offices in Jordan, Myanmar, and Cambodia; AICS Yangon (competent office for Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia); Ing. C.M. Lerici Foundation, and “Fondazione Scuola Beni e Attività Culturali” in Italy. Across these institutions, he has managed major projects on cultural heritage safeguarding, sustainable tourism, and capacity building; developed monitoring and evaluation frameworks; and coordinated multi-stakeholder partnerships, drawing on his strong background in strategic planning and technical project management.

Mr. Romano has contributed to the management and conservation of several landmark heritage sites, including Mrauk-U, Sri Ksetra (Pyu Ancient Cities), My Son, Banteay Chhmar, Angkor, and Wat Phou. He has also authored several publications related to UNESCO cultural heritage.

Alongside his fieldwork, he has pursued an academic career, serving as Adjunct Faculty at the American University of Rome and as Cultural Heritage Advisor at Ing. C.M. Lerici Foundation, where he contributed to the development and delivery of specialized capacity-building programs on sustainable cultural heritage.

Mr. Romano holds a PhD in Architecture and Urban Planning Landscape from the Polytechnic University of Milan, a Master’s degree in Archaeology from the Roma Tre University. He has also conducted visiting research at the University College London. In addition, He has completed specialized courses in EU project design, procurement and grant management (PRAG), and Results-Based Management (RBM) approaches.

He is fluent in Italian and English, has good command of French and Spanish, and basic knowledge of Burmese.
